Institute At A Glance

Introduction

Government Polytechnic, Panaji, is one of the foremost Technical Institutes in the state of Goa. It offers AICTE approved Diploma Programmes in various streams and aims to provide Quality Technician Education to meet the requirements of the changing educational scenario. The Institute has a Mandate and Mission of its own.

Background

The Institute was set up in August 1963, with three disciplines namely Civil, Mechanical and Electrical with 40 seats in each disciplines. Prior to this period this Institution was known as 'Escola de Industrial e Commercial' under the Portuguese rule and certificate courses were conducted in different vocations.

After the Liberation of Goa the Institute of 'Escola de Industrial e Commercial' was upgraded to the Polytechnic status. It was shifted to the spacious campus at the picturesque Altinho hill in 1968. Initially it was affiliated to the Board of Technical Examinations, Maharashtra state. Since 1988 it is under the Board of Technical Education, Goa.

Diploma Programmes

There are totally Twelve (12) Diploma Programmes being conducted in this Institute. The latest addition being Diploma in Computer Engineering. The programmes are conducted in the Main Building and the Extension Wing of the Institute. The courses offered are of two types as shown below:

Infrastructure

The Institute has exceptionally good infrastructure. The Institute campus spreads over a vast area of 74,000 square meter, on top of the Altinho hill. There are a number of separate blocks:

All the Departments have excellent, well equipped laboratories. It has a highly qualified teaching faculty. More than 60% of the staff are Post Graduates and two of them hold Doctorate degree.

The Institute Library is undoubtedly one of the best in the state, comparable with the library of any degree college. It has more than 45,000 books and has a rich collection of a number of Encyclopedia and  Handbooks on a number of topics. 

The Institute has an Auditorium with a seating capacity for 200 people . In addition there is an air-conditioned Seminar Hall in the Extension Wing.

Two massive playgrounds adorn the Institute campus. A Basket Ball court is situated in one of the smaller playgrounds. The Badminton court and a Gymnasium are located in the Gymkhana block.

Admission Procedure

Since the year 1997-98 the Government has introduced a Centralized Admission System for the various Diploma courses in all the Government Polytechnics in Goa. The Directorate of Technical Education (D.T.E) is publishing a Common Information Bulletin and Application Form for Admission to the various programmes, immediately after the declaration of S.S.C results.

Prizes

The Institute awards various prizes to meritorious and deserving students, from the donations instituted by individual Donors / Organizations.

Services Rendered To The Public

The Government of Goa has approved the Internal Resource Generation Scheme to this Institute, wherein the various services are being rendered to the Public/Institutions/Factories/Organizations etc. on payment basis.
