With a view of giving an impetus to the Education of Women, the Government of Goa envisaged a plan to open new Diploma streams exclusively for girl students. One such stream was, 'Electronics & Instrumentation' and was started as early as 1984, in the main Institute Building. Subsequently a new building was constructed within the Institute campus, to accomodate this stream and two additional Diploma disciplines viz. 'Garment Technology' and Architectural Engineering were added. Accordingly a new wing of Government Polytechnic was set up in 1996.
It was originally called "Women's Wing", since the programmes were meant only for girl students. However since the demand from the girl students, for these disciplines, was declining, it was decided to induct both boys and girls for these courses. Hence the wing was renamed as 'Extension Wing' of Government Polytechnic.
The Extension Wing is a beautiful, spacious structure with the latest facilities. Apart from housing spacious classrooms and laboratories, for individual Departments, it has an excellent Computer Centre, an air-conditioned Seminar Hall, and an Architectural Studio. There is also an Exhibition Hall, wherein different exhibits are displayed, whenever any Exhibition is conducted. A Library section meets the requirements of books and periodicals of the students. The Gymkhana is another feature which adds to the assets of the Wing. The Canteen is located in the basement, where delicious Vegetarian and Non-Vegetarian dishes are served.
